Food has always been
more than fuel to me, though it’s hard to elucidate on exactly what I mean when
I say that. Food features at the centre of many fond childhood memories:
sitting at the kitchen table with my Mum eating delicious, buttery banana
sandwiches as a toddler; making Christmas pudding almost every October, the
boozy and fruity concoction filling the kitchen with Christmas smells two months too early; cooking my first grown up recipe, from an M&S cookbook,
of chicken in white wine sauce for my Nana during the summer holidays. Even
during the troubling teenage years, whilst I was baking cakes and sometimes tea
for the family, in my head I was presenting a TV show, sharing the recipes to
an imaginary audience via a non-existent camera. It’s fair to say food has
always stirred my imagination. If a better word existed I would use it, but I
guess I would say I am definitely a ‘foodie’.
When I met my partner,
Adam, I found my soulmate, and it was quickly clear that we were kindred spirits in the kitchen. During the first few months of
meeting whilst at university we got to know each other by cooking massive Sunday
lunches, fish pies, and lasagnes for his housemates - that and going to the pub a lot. And almost 13 years later, we cook,
eat, shop for, and talk about food together constantly. Food has been a non-stop
thread throughout our relationship; a constant source of comfort and pleasure
that we now include our kids in. This little culinary journey is not one I am embarking on alone
and I could not even begin to attempt to create a food blog without giving gargantuan credit
to Adam: a more careful and naturally talented cook than I am, he is
very much as food obsessed as me, and many of ‘our’ old recipes are actually
his.
I can definitely say that almost a year after beginning this blog my cooking (and photography!) has improved. Just knowing I have a small but important audience makes me try harder. I hope that my blog inspires busy people, parents in particular, to cook from scratch more. My recipes are always easy (if I can do them anyone can), normally fairly nourishing and wholesome, and hopefully always delicious. I am by no means perfect. I sometimes eat cereal for dinner. But most days I exhaust myself to put a decent home cooked meal on the table. Why? Because making delicious food for the people you love is the best thing in the world as far as I'm concerned.
